Journal Entry – 4.23.2018

It is 8:25 PM on Monday April 23rd, 2018.  This is my inaugural post on my new Dell Inspiron 3000 notebook.

I had been accumulating prepaid gift cards and absolutely hate the “maintenance fees” on those so wanted to use them as quickly as possible.   The problem is they can be impossible to use on the internet, or at Costco and I wanted to spend them all at once because I hate jumping through the hoops to check the balance online.  I first gave them to my wife so she could buy clothes but she didn’t find anything.  I then checked to see if I could have the money transferred into my bank but that didn’t work either.  We then thought we could buy a new Blueray player but Best Buy didn’t have any region free versions which is needed since we have Japanese DVDs.

So finally, I got the idea of buying a cheap, small and lightweight laptop so I could carry it around and write in this blog when I felt like it.  I had to pick something from Best Buy so I could use the cards and this little laptop was my choice.

In other news the Fighter’s Cup is coming up. I’ve learned that I shouldn’t think about it since I start to picture how the fight will go and my body starts to get excited.  I’m not worried about doing the fights but I am concerned about the stamina aspect.  I don’t have much stamina and the worst part for me is when I’m completely out of gas but have to keep fighting.  Again, best just to get out there and do it instead of thinking about it too much beforehand.

I’m still continuing on my journey to limit my internet usage and all the tracking that comes when I do use it.  Limiting tracking in my browser definitely slows the process down as many websites just don’t work unless I give them permission in NoScript; it is just an extra step I need to do.  The internet has become so creepy with all this tracking going on; you’re constantly monitored and this is something that would have left people aghast just 10 short years ago.  Using NoScript I can see just how many processes are monitoring me when I visit certain websites and it is simply astounding.

As for social media I’m off of it; it just wasn’t fun anymore.  I miss the early days of the internet when it was new and exciting.  I’ve found that to regain that excitement I have to break my old habits, learn new things and actively seek out websites that encourage learning, encourage thinking.  It is no good to just jump on Facebook or Reddit since I’m not getting any joy from these websites.  What I do like is posting on my blog for me to read in the future.  I don’t care about visitors, views or likes; I do this for my own benefit and to record my own life for my own use.

As for social media and keeping in touch, I feel like a burden has been lifted in simply not checking those sites much anymore.  Life is simply more peaceful and pleasant.  As for mobile, unfortunately I wasn’t able to get the old Motorola to work even with a new battery.  I think that phone is completely dead but I haven’t given up completely yet.  I do hope they come out with a new version of the Motorola RAZR and I’ll be one of the first to buy.

I’ve started working out more and karate participation is back on schedule.  However, at 40 years old my body recovers more slowly and I’m stiff.  This is unlike when I was younger and my body recovered so quickly.  I now hear myself groaning when I have to get up off the floor.

Speaking of which, I’m pretty tired from practice today and think it is time for bed.

One final note is that I’ve completed just about everything there is to do in Zelda Breath of the Wild.  I think I’ll only continue playing for another week or so and be done with it.  This will leave more time to continue relearning how to use the internet and make it enjoyable again.

Goodnight.
