It is 1:57 PM and I have a rare moment of peace during the middle of the day. I had mentioned previously that I think it would be fun for you to read about current affairs from my point of view 50, 100 years from now.
Donald Trump remains the main issue of the day. As my Dad said, “Trump is a national IQ test and lots and lots of Americans are flunking.” I wonder if you will look back on this as the moment that democracy failed. Even though we have more universities and access to higher education than any other time in history it is proving to not be enough. Should Trump win the presidency it is proof that the people are not smart enough to elect their own leaders and we should close up this experiment in democracy.
For me, I would prefer a council of elders whose eligibility is indisputable. They couldn’t be nominated like the Supreme Court is because they are just as partisan as the politicians. It would have to be something more like the Council of Elrond from Lord of the Rings – with very clear judgement and a dash of magical power. If Trump had been in this council he would have put the ring on and become the new dark lord for sure. And it is not a far stretch to say that if he wins the presidency he will be much like a dark lord ushering in a very sad time for our country. In case you are wondering I am listening to the LOTR soundtrack at the moment so the analogy didn’t just come out of nowhere.
I wonder if you’ll look back at 2016 as the year America failed? Or perhaps Trump will just be a footnote in history about the time America almost shot itself in the foot?
Republicans are up in arms as they witness the shattering of their party. Eight years of hate has born a very bitter fruit which they now refuse to eat. Finally, the Republicans see themselves in the mirror and cannot help but turn away. All the hate, anger, and aggressiveness, have turned out a fucking Sith Lord and they cannot contain him as his miti-chlorians in the form of supporters is much greater than they ever imagined.
It is here in 2016 that the Grand Old Party has been laid low, and it really is quite sad.
What else can I tell you? From all the stuff going on in the Middle East, current moves by China and North Korea shooting off missiles I would say that we’re now closer to WW3 than any other time since the end of the second world war. We as humans are still animals…. no, I take that back as it is offensive to animals. A lion can go kill some prey, eat and be satisfied for a while until hunger requires another hunt. A human on the other hand is never satisfied: having gained enough to live a comfortable existence they will still want more, and when they have more they will then want power. An animal is easily satisfied but a human never is until the race for money, power and influence culminate into a massive war that leads millions dead and those that still live exhausted from the struggle. Then the cycle starts over again.
In other news my boss mentioned a tv show he thought I’d enjoy called The Goldbergs which is about a family living in the 80s. I haven’t watched TV in years but I do enjoy Netflix and only two current shows which are Downton Abbey and Game of Thrones. But I gave The Goldbergs a try and have to say I enjoyed it as it made me reminisce about that wonderful decade. Sure I was only a kid but I remember it well enough and the 80s were a lot of fun. So, now I not only have “The Throwback Station” which plays my jams from the 90s but also my 80s show. It is as if this show and radio station are whispering to me “Hey, if you didn’t realize it yet, you have aged.” And it is true, I didn’t feel as though I’d aged up until I turned 37 and now the reminders seem to be everywhere.
It isn’t that I care much, I think the glorification of youth is a bit overdone. And when I read this post at 50 I’m going to want to smack myself if I wallow around at 38 wishing I was 25 again. I’ve been fortunate enough to have a lot of fun at every age and I don’t plan on stopping that now. I do see a lot of acquaintances becoming “aged” aka boring, because that is what society tells them to do – they are becoming their own mothers and fathers. Guys and gals that were absolutely wild in high school now attend church regularly and feel better discussing snacks for the bake sale than challenging authority. Be like everyone else, there is safety in that and it is what is expected.
Well, I think I’ll wrap up this post now.
